Artist Spotlight: Lisa Ray Koenig (Groovy Cats Art)

Meet Lisa Ray Koenig

Former Radio Broadcaster and Freelance Columnist, my career has taken many paths… With time on my hands, I found myself tossing paint onto canvas in March 2020. Experimenting with many varied styles of painting I am still finding my groove. I like to paint; it brings me joy! Oh, I should mention, that there is always a cat hiding somewhere in my artwork.

Interview with Lisa

Can you describe one the key moments in your artistic journey? Did you always know you’d be an artist?

I just started painting in March of 2020 as a way to distract myself from the chaos of the pandemic, and I also had time to get creative. As I began posting my creative distractions on my social media feeds people took notice. It was when I sold a painting that was key in my artistic journey.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an artist… I suppose I always has some sort of artistic talent within me, but life takes over and it wasn’t until I had the time to rediscover this talent that I began to flourish.

What sparks your creativity and inspires your artwork?

So many things can spark my creativity… a walk around the neighbourhood where I see the beauty of a crow perched on a tree branch or whilst wandering around a forest on a sunny day when the colours are so magical, I think ‘how can I recreate those colours’ taking myself into nature is a wonderful way to spark creativity.

From there inspiration isn’t too far away. I could be flipping through a magazine, find something and think ‘how can I use this in my paintings’ also I love listening to music as I paint. For me the music sets the tone for my paintings. Not only do I find inspiration in the lyrics of the music but in the melody too.

How would you describe your artistic style?

I never thought I had an artistic style, until someone commented on my style as this; “The feel of Monet if he’d lived in New York City in the 60’s and knew Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol and spent a winter in Canada and worshiped cats! Love Lisa’s style it’s totally unique.”

I think I am still finding my groove as far as artistic style goes, I like to play with paint.

What place does art have in your life? What importance?

Art is my escape, when I am happy, I paint, when I am stressed, I paint… it allows me to create whatever whimsy strikes me. What ever I create, there I am. Without art life is just vanilla.

What does Art and Found Day mean to you or why are your participating?

Ooooh Art and Found Day was a great discovery! This one day of the year is absolute bliss! For me, I love taking this day to pay my art forward. The idea of ‘hiding’ my artwork around my community and leaving clues on my social media pages as to where to find my pieces is such fun. Seeing the joy on someone’s face when they find a Groovy Cats original is priceless!

This will be my 3rd year participating and not only do I look forward to Art and Found Day each year but so do those who collect Groovy Cats Art. I have had people reach out to me to ask if I am participating in Art and Found Day so they can find my artwork. This day is truly an inspiration onto itself. I hope that if someone finds my artwork it inspires them to pick up a paint brush and toss some paint onto a canvas.
